Death of Pliny the Elder

Death of Pliny the Elder Ancient Places and/or Civilizations Disasters Famous Historical Events Visual Arts

Pliny the Elder, who was a commander of the fleet and stationed at Misenum, left the cape to investigate the effects of Vesuvius's eruption and to help friends at Sabiae.

Trying to make everyone else calm, he took a nap (for awhile) but was awakened when the impact of Vesuvius' massive eruption also reached Stabiae.

Although others with him survived, Pliny died as a result of the disaster.  This drawing illustrates an artist's interpretation of that event.
