Image depicting the bust of Roman Emperor, Didius Julianus.  He was a short-lived Caesar, serving as Emperor for 66 days.

He came to power by offering soldiers more money than his competitors (since the prior Caesar - Pertinax - had not named a successor).  In effect, Didius Julianus achieved the highest position of power in ancient Rome by means of an auction.
