Not normally a writer of poetry - or anything else as a published author - Mary Elizabeth Frye (an American who lived in Baltimore) was moved by the story of a young Jewish girl who was mourning the loss of her mother.

Although she had wanted to return to Germany - where her mother was dying - Frye's house guest was unable to go because of Nazi policies in effect at the time.  It was too dangerous to return to the place where anti-Semitism was thriving.

Because she was not with her mother, when she died, the young girl was very upset.  She wasn't there to hold her mother's hand.  She wasn't able to bury her.  She never had a chance to cry at her mother's grave.

As a way to comfort this girl in mourning, Frye wrote these words.

However ... for about 70 years no one knew the real story.  No one even knew who wrote the poem.

Then ... in 1998 ... Abigail Van Buren (the journalist known as "Dear Abbey") talked with Mary Elizabeth Frye.  She confirmed that she was the author and provided proof which satisfied Van Buren.  Frye had reportedly written the poem in 1932.

Do not Stand at My Grave and Weep
By Mary Elizabeth Frye

(Read by Carole Bos)

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there.  I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there.  I did not die.
