King Philip II, of Spain, was building a large empire. The Netherlands (also known as Holland) was among other countries he wanted to subjugate.
Much to Philip's consternation, Queen Elizabeth was helping to fund Dutch rebels. It was one of the reasons why the King of Spain decided to send an Armada to England.
This image depicts a painting called Relief of Leiden, by Otto van Veen in 1574. It depicts Dutch rebels attempting to rid the Dutch town of Leiden from Spanish control.
The original painting is maintained by the Rijks Museum, Amsterdam.
