Early Days of Oil Exploration- Gladys City, Texas

Early Days of Oil Exploration- Gladys City, Texas American History Geography Social Studies

After oil was discovered in Texas, people rushed to "oil country" to make their fortunes.  The "black gold" rush was akin to the California gold rush half-a-century earlier.

This photo depicts the original Gladys City, Texas (c. 1901).  It became a "boom town" because of Spindletop, the nearby oil field.
