Since developing the plate tectonics theory, in the 1960s, scientists believe that plates move near their boundary zones. When plates move (in various ways), seismic activity occurs.
A particularly vulnerable area of plate boundaries is known as the "Ring of Fire." This image, from the U.S. Geological Survey, depicts its location.
To learn more about how tectonic plates move, causing the "Ring of Fire" areas to be vulnerable, visit the USGS website.
