Emmett Till - A New Case

Emmett Till's mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, maintained her focus regarding the death of her son until her own life was over, in 2003.  Her willingness to speak-out, in 1955 and later, helped the Civil Rights Movement to gain widespread support throughout America.

She wanted to be certain, as she always said, that her son had not died in vain.  In this clip, from "Emmett Till - The Untold Story," Mamie tells us how she was, in fact, certain that her child's death had meaning.

As a result of the investigation behind the documentary,  the U.S. Justice Department opened an investigation into Bo's murder in 2004 (the year after his mother died).  Working together with the Mississippi District Attorney's office (for the 4th District), the plan was to determine whether any prosecutions were still viable - 50 years after the kidnapping and murder.

One thing was certain when these proceedings were announced.  The new investigation would never ensnare Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam.

Although they could not be prosecuted again for murder - because of "double jeopardy laws" - they could have been charged with kidnapping.  Both men, however, were dead by the time of this announcement.  Milam died in 1980; Bryant died in 1990.
