Enemy at the Gates, by William Craig, is a story about the agonizing months of battle that the people of Stalingrad endured as their city was bombarded by Hitler's military forces. 

The battle for Stalingrad - which began during the summer of 1942 and ended on February 2, 1943 - was the deadliest of World War II.  Most historians consider that Hitler's loss of Stalingrad was a key turning-point of the war.
