Erythroxylum novogranatense - Source of Cocaine

Erythroxylum novogranatense-Source of Cocaine

E. novogranatense - which grows in Colombia and in the north coastal deserts of Peru - has a naturally occurring alkaloid in its leaves.  That alkaloid is called "cocaine."

Like E. coca, the leaves of the E. novogranatense are picked 3 to 4 times each year.  Local people earn a living by growing the plants and harvesting the leaves.
