Essex - Journey of the Surviving Whaleboats

This map depicts the incredibly difficult and lengthy journey undertaken by George Pollard and Owen Chase as they sailed  toward the Chilean coast after their ship, the Essex, was wrecked by a huge sperm whale on November 20, 1820.

In all, the men covered nearly 3,000 miles as they struggled to survive a lack of food and water.
