On the 9th of September, 1939, the BBC aired this broadcast on the evacuation of Britain's school children.  The reporter, at Waterloo Station Platform 12, tells us that  children of all ages - from "tiny tots" to high-school teens - were leaving their families for the relative safety of the countryside.

About three million people were evacuated from cities and towns during the first four days of September.

More evacuations would follow.  Some of the children did not return to their families until the war in Europe was over in the spring of 1945.
