Events Leading to Battle at Horns of Hattin

During June and July of 1187, between the Second and Third Crusades, tensions between the Franks and Saladin's forces grew ever-more intense.

When a small group of Frankish forces assaulted Saladin's forces at Saffuriyah (Sephorie)—near Nazareth—they were annihilated.

This map depicts the location of Saffuriyah (Sephorie) together with the movement of Crusader and Muslim forces during the relevant time frame. The opposing sides would ultimately meet—and do massive battle—at the Horns of Hattin on July 4, 1187.
