F-4 Phantom II

F-4 Phantom II Visual Arts Ethics American History Government

First used by the U.S. Navy, the F-4 Phantom II was evaluated by the U.S. Air Force in 1962.  The question was whether this jet was capable of three key USAF duties:  counter-air operations, interdiction and close air support.

The F-4 was approved for Air Force use in 1962 and, soon thereafter, the F-4C was ready.  Its maiden flight was on the 27th of May, 1963.

Other versions of the F-4 were:

  • F-4 D:  Delivered to the U.S. Air Force in March, 1966
  • F-4 E:  Delivered to the U.S. Air Force in October, 1967

Replaced by planes with newer technology, the F-4s are no longer used by the U.S. military.
