Fighting in Vietnam with a Peace Symbol in Place

Fighting in Vietnam with a Peace Symbol in Place American History Cold War History Social Studies World History

In what almost seems like a dichotomy, this soldier is doing his job while wearing a peace symbol.  At the moment he is fighting in Vietnam, the anti-war movement in America was already strong.

Maintained at the U.S. National Archives, this picture has the following description:

Vietnam....Specialist. 4 Richard Champion, squad leader, Company B, 4th Battalion, 21st Infantry, 11th Light Infantry Brigade, shouts instructions to his squad after receiving sniper fire while on patrol on Hill 56, 70 miles southeast of Chu Lai.  01/19/1971
