First Nine of the Cincinnati Red Stockings, 1869

In 1869—the year Tuchfarber, Walkley & Moellman created and published this lithograph—baseball starters for each team were called "The Nine." This image depicts the first nine starters for the Cincinnati Red Stockings.

Not only were these men Cincinnati's first nine starters, they were the first nine starters of professional baseball (since the Cincinnati Red Stockings became America's first professional baseball team).

This lithograph is part of the "American Treasures of the Library of Congress."
