Flying combat missions, B-24 crews frequently encountered anti-aircraft fire from opposing forces.  In this photo, we see a B-24 with its engine in trouble.

NARA provides the following information about the bomber which was used in the European theater:

Consolidated B-24 emerges from "flak alley" over Vienna, Austria with its No. 2 engine smoking. (U.S. Air Force photo.)
