This image depicts a 17th-century drawing of Fort de Rocher which once stood on the island of Tortuga.  It is now in ruins.

Jean La Vasseur, a French engineer, built the fort (around 1640) to help the island's residents resist Spanish forces who tried to keep Tortuga for Spain.

Pirates reportedly used the fort, as well, during their "Brethren of the Coast" years.
