After Eliza Poe died - leaving three small children motherless - Frances ("Fanny") Allan agreed to care-for Edgar Poe.

Married to John Allan, who refused to adopt Edgar, Fanny was Poe's much-loved foster mother until she, too, died of tuberculosis.
