Gerry Bertier - Paralyzing Car Accident American History Biographies Famous Historical Events Film Visual Arts Sports

After winning the championship game, Gerry Bertier was in a terrible car accident which left him paralyzed.

In this photo - included in a news article published soon after the accident - he is visited by his Titans coach (Herman Boone) and two of his teammates (Brad Smith and Julius Campbell).

In addition to winning Virginia's AAA football championship, for 1971, the Titans had other reasons to congratulate each other.  The three young men, pictured here, were among The Star's All-Metro team.
