Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - Portrait and Background

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow-Portrait and Background

In 1807, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born in Portland, Maine.

The stories of American history fascinated him and provided a backdrop for his many poems. Incorporating historical facts into his best-known works, Longfellow also created myths and legends.

His poems cover various time frames, such as Native-American oral history (The Song of Hiawatha), the Acadian diaspora (Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie) and the first skirmish of the American Revolution (Paul Revere's Ride).
