Holland and Chicago - Map Locator

Holland and Chicago - Map Locator American History History Geography

Holland - a Michigan seaport town - is located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, approximately 150 miles northeast of Chicago.

While Chicago burned, during the Great Fire of 1871, so did Holland - at about the same time.  Many of the town's residents tried to save some of their personal items - such as furniture - by burying them in the sand. Some of those fire-saved items are now in the possession of the Holland Museum.
