How Does Charity Help Survivors of Disasters?

At the same time as the Chicago and Peshtigo fires, during October of 1871, the Michigan seaport town of Holland also burned catastrophically. People in the nearby town of Grand Haven came to the aid of their destitute neighbors, located twenty miles away.

What causes people to risk their own lives and to spend their own money to help lessen the plight of their neighbors?

Even wealthy people, who have lost everything, become instantly dependent on the generosity of others to “receive supplies according to the number in his or her family.” Does need replace pride under such circumstances? Explain your answer.
