Huck Finn "Steals Away" from the Widow Douglas' Home

Huck Finn

Living with the Widow Douglas doesn’t mean that Huck Finn has to follow all of her rules. At least ... that is Huck’s view of the world.

This image, by E.W. Kemble, appears in the first chapter of the first edition of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It illustrates these words of the story (about Huck breaking a rule):

...I put out the light and scrambled out of the window on to the shed. Then I slipped down to the ground and crawled in among the trees, and, sure enough, there was Tom Sawyer waiting for me.
