Hungry Ukrainians Die in Kharkiv

As the situation in Ukraine grows more dire, between 1932-1933, people leave their villages to search for food elsewhere. It is a daunting and nearly impossible task since the farming villages all share the same fate. Policies against farmers, which Stalin has imposed, apply throughout the whole land.

Kharkiv—then the capital of Ukraine—has its share of starving people. This picture was taken by Alexander Wienerberger, a German national who was working in Kharkiv circa 1933, and is now part of the Innitzer Collection.

Implementing Stalin’s orders—to make sure that Ukrainian families have given-up their farms, their homes, their animals, their food and their other possessions to the government’s collective farms—Soviet officials visit farms throughout the country’s villages. When people who have nothing left leave their villages, they try to find food in cities like Kharkiv.

This photo is maintained at the National Museum in Kiev. It is part of a “Memorial in Commemoration of Famines’ Victims in Ukraine” and is online via the Holodomor Research & Education Consortium.

Curators, at the museum, provide this description of the activities depicted in the photo:

This is a black and white image taken in Kharkiv in the 1932-33 [era] and is part of the Innitzer collection. This image depicts 3 adults laying on the side of the road, two seemingly dead, and another siting against a fence, all of them emaciated and in rags. Two pedestrians walk by on the street in this image as though they don't see these dying individuals.
