Illustration: East Louisiana Railroad Company Tragedies and Triumphs African American History Civil Rights Famous Historical Events Social Studies

Homer Plessy boarded a train, similar to the train depicted in this image, operated by the East Louisiana Railroad Company.  Because he was 1/8 black, Homer was forced to sit in a blacks-only rail carriage.  He refused to do that.

His refusal led to a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court which sanctioned separation of the races in America.  The damage done by that case - Plessy v Ferguson - was significant and long-lasting.
