James V and Mary of Guise - Parents of Mary Stewart

James V and Mary of Guise - Parents of Mary Stewart Biographies Famous People Social Studies Visual Arts

James V (a Stewart) and Mary of Guise (a French princess) were the parents of Mary, Queen of Scots.  Both had been previously married:

  • James had a very short-lived marriage to Madeleine of Valois (daughter of King Francis I, of France);
  • Mary had a successful-but-short marriage to Louis, Duke d'Longeville (with whom she had two sons).

Together, James V and Mary of Guise had two sons but neither of them survived.  Their daughter, Mary, would go on to become Queen of Scots at the death of her father (when she was six days old).
