Jesus in Anguish - Andrea Mantegna

Jesus in Anguish - Andrea Mantegna Visual Arts World History Philosophy

In this tempera-on-panel, entitled “The Agony in the Garden,” Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506) imagines what it might have been like for Jesus to contemplate what he will face in the days ahead.

While he prays, and struggles with his upcoming trial and death, his disciples sleep nearby.

Art historians believe Mantegna created this work between c 1458 and c. 1460.  It measures 63 x 80 cm (24.8 x 31.5 inches) and is currently maintained by the National Gallery in London, England.
