Jesus on the Cross by Andrea Mantegna Visual Arts World History Philosophy

Andrea Mantegna created this tempera-on-wood, called "The Crucifixion," between 1456 and 1459.

It was a commissioned work, from the Abbot of the Basilica of San Zeno (in Verona, Italy).  Created for the church's high altar, the work measures 76 cm (29.9 in) high and 96 cm (37.8 in) wide.

Today, the painting is maintained by the Louvre

EDITOR'S NOTE.  This Basilica, in Verona, is also famous for something else.  Scholars believe that Shakespeare used its crypt as the setting for the marriage of Romeo and Juliet.
