John Andre - Captured While Wearing a Disguise

John Andre-Captured While Wearing a Disguise

If John André had worn his own uniform, he would not have been charged as a spy.  But he followed the advice of Benedict Arnold who told him to wear civilian clothes.  That fact, plus the West Point documents which his captors found in his boots, led to his trial as a British spy.

In this Currier & Ives image, we see André (in civilian clothing) with his captors (John Paulding, David Williams, and Isaac Van War).
