Joseph Holt - Chief Prosecutor of Mary Surratt

Joseph Holt - Chief Prosecutor of Mary Surratt Trials Visual Arts American History Social Studies

This painting depicts Joseph Holt, Judge Advocate General and chief prosecutor of Mary Surratt and the other Lincoln-conspiracy defendants.

The year after the trial, Holt wrote a pamphlet entitled:  Vindication of Judge Advocate General Holt From the Foul Slanders of Traitors, Confessed Perjurers and Suborners.  It was his effort to defend his actions during the conspiracy trial, among other things.

Louis P. Spinner, a Washington artist, painted this portrait.  It was created about five years before Holt died on August 1, 1894.
