Katniss - Arrowhead Plant

Katniss - Arrowhead Plant Awesome Radio - Narrated Stories Geography STEM

Katniss Everdeen is named after the katniss plant (which is commonly known as "arrowhead").  Its genus is Sagittaria L.

Her father - a coalminer, singer and expert hunter/gatherer - gave Katniss her name.  He once joked that she would never starve as long as she could find herself.  That's because the katniss plant produces tubers (sometimes called "duck potatoes").

Native Americans used katniss tubers extensively during their years of ascendancy in North America.  As shown by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, various forms of the arrowhead plant are found throughout North America.
