League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Summary

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is an action fantasy film set in the late 19th century. The movie features a variety of fictional literary characters appropriate to the period.

Leading the group is Allan Quartermain (Sean Connery). Quartermain, a hunter/explorer, is the hero of H. Rider Haggard’s novel King Solomon’s Mines. Other members of the League include Mina Harker (Peta Wilson), Captain Nemo (Naseeruddin Shah), Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde (Jason Flemyng), Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend), Rodney Skinner (Tony Curran), and Tom Sawyer (Shane West).

Mina Harker is a chemist from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. In 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Jules Verne introduces the world to Captain Nemo and to a submarine named the Nautilus. Dr. Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde is the main character from Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous story, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Dorian uses a picture to obtain immortality in Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. Rodney Skinner is a thief based on H.G. Wells’ The Invisible Man. Tom Sawyer is an adult version of Mark Twain’s famous character.

In this movie, these legendary characters join forces to prevent a world war. Working with “M” (Richard Roxburgh), the League tries to stop bombs planted beneath Venice from exploding. The League members learn they are being double-crossed. M calls them together to get physical items from each team member (Skinner's invisible skin, Jekyll's Hyde formula, Mina's blood, Nemo's technology, and Quartermain is needed to capture Hyde). M plans to make superhuman formulas to sell to the highest paying bidders.

In this story behind the movie, meet the famous literary characters who are members of this unique League. Explore the world as it exists at the close of the 19th century. Learn about visionary authors who write about discoveries, like flight, well before they actually exist.
