Leiden - Stadhuis, William Bradford Wedding

Leiden - Stadhuis, William Bradford Wedding American History Famous People Geography

This image depicts the Stadhuis (City Hall) in Leiden, The Netherlands.  Some accounts report that William Bradford (who would become the Pilgrims' governor in the "New World") married his first wife, Dorothy May, in this building.

However, historical records tell us that Bradford married Dorothy (the daughter of English parents who were living in Amsterdam) in that city (on the 10th of December, 1613).

Dorothy traveled with Bradford aboard the Mayflower, but she never set-foot on American land.  While the Mayflower was moored at Cape Cod, she slipped and fell into the freezing water where she drowned.  Dorothy's death took place on December 7, 1620.
