For a period of time, the people who would eventually become known as "The Pilgrims" lived in the town of Leiden, The Netherlands.  They were able to follow their religious beliefs there, at least for awhile.

A university town (then and now), the city provided a rich intellectual environment for the Englishmen. This image depicts the academy building (Academiegebouw) at Leiden University (Universiteit Leiden) in Leiden, The Netherlands.

During medieval times, this part of today's University was a convent chapel.  Now it is the oldest part of Leiden University.

The Pilgrims moved to this town in May of 1609 and remained there until 1620.
