Louis XVI - Time with His Family before Execution

Louis XVI - Time with His Family before Execution Famous Historical Events Famous People Social Studies Trials World History Visual Arts

After Louis XVI received his death sentence, he spent time with his family the day before his execution.  They were at the Temple - a former fortress, then a prison in Paris - where family members were kept under surveillance in different rooms.

Although he told his family he would see them again, the following morning - the day of his execution - Louis could not bear to go through the pain of another parting.  The day before his death would be the last time the royal family was together.
