Margaret Thatcher became Britain's first female prime minister following the country's national election on the 3rd of May, 1979.  This photo depicts her appearance at the time.

She remained prime minister 11½ years, formally tendering her resignation to Queen Elizabeth II on the 28th of November, 1990.
