Mariinsky Theater

Mariinsky Theater Geography Philosophy

The Mariinsky Theatre, in St Petersburg, is named after Empress Maria Alexandrovna.  (She was the wife of Tsar Alexander II.)

During the Soviet era, this theater was known as the Kirov Opera and Ballet Theatre.  The building, as we see it today, dates back to 1859.  The auditorium seats 1,625 people.

The internationally famous Kirov Ballet Company (also known as the Mariinsky Ballet) is based here.
