Memo to Ambassador Lodge - October 5, 1963

On the 5th of October, 1963, McGeorge Bundy - a special adviser to President Kennedy - wrote an "Eyes Only" memo to Ambassador Lodge (who was serving U.S. interests in South Vietnam).

In this memo, Bundy conveys a message to Lodge that the President intends to keep certain actions from the press:

This is of particular importance since some officials and reporters honorably believe in just such a public posture of disapproval and pressure.  President therefore believes you should personally control knowledge of individual actions and of tactics, and accept, as we will try to, necessary dissatisfaction of determined reporters with cryptic posture.
