This illustration depicts the military court, in session, during trial of the "Lincoln Conspirators."

The method of trial - military instead of civilian - was a major point of contention at the time since the defendants were not members of the military.

Over objections, however, a military tribunal tried and convicted four of the alleged conspirators.
