Misenum - Seen From the Space Shuttle

Misenum - Seen From the Space Shuttle World History Geography

Today the ancient headland of Misenum is known as Capo (Cape) Miseno.  It is the northernmost limit of the Gulf of Naples (directly across from Procida Island).

When Vesuvius erupted, in 79 AD, Misenum provided an important (and safe) natural shelter for the imperial fleet which was based in Portus Julius.

This image depicts how Misenum / Capo Miseno appears from space.
