Montana - Location of Hell Creek Formation

Montana - Location of Hell Creek Formation American History Famous Historical Events Social Studies STEM Geography

The “Hell Creek Formation,” in Montana, is a place where paleontologists have found dinosaur fossils.  It was also the focus of a study, in 1991, to determine whether dinosaurs gradually declined or became abruptly extinct.

Dr. David E. Fastovsky and his colleagues concluded that the extinction was sudden.  Those findings disagreed with an earlier study (by Van Valen and Sloane) which concluded that the extinction was gradual.
