Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven

Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in C-sharp Minor, Opus 27, No. 2, is more commonly known by the name it was given after the composer’s death - “The Moonlight Sonata.”

Ludwig, himself, called it his sonata quasi una fantasia -  a sonata rather like a fantasy.  It is played, in the "Immortal Beloved" film, as a 2/2 adagio sostenuto.  Some experts believe that is the way Beethoven wanted it performed (which is faster than it is typically heard today).

In this clip from "Immortal Beloved," Murray Perahia plays a portion of the sonata’s first movement.
