Mosaic of Alexander Discovered in Pompeii

Mosaic of Alexander Discovered in Pompeii Visual Arts Legends and Legendary People Ancient Places and/or Civilizations World History

This image depicts detail from a mosaic of Alexander the Great in battle against Darius III at the Battle of Issus, in 333 BC. (Not all scholars agree, however, that the battle-scene is meant to portray the fighting at Issus.  It could also be the Battle of Gaugamela which occurred in 331 BC.)

The original was found at the House of the Faun during archeological excavations in Pompeii and removed, from its source, in 1841.  Today it is cared-for by curators at The National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
