Professor Giuseppe Fiorelli’s method of pouring Plaster of Paris into open spaces of hardened volcanic ash, in which the deteriorating bodies of Pompeii’s residents had been buried, brought to light the victims of Vesuvius’ 79 AD eruption.

This image depicts the plaster casts of a mother and child who died in the disaster.
