Mt. Rushmore - Vault Entrance, Hall of Records Visual Arts Geography Social Studies World History

Gutzon Borglum envisioned more for Mt. Rushmore than four presidential carvings.  He also wanted to create a “Hall of Records” in a crevice immediately behind the mountain.

Although the hall itself never really took shape, the way Borglum hoped, this photo - from the late 1930s - shows us that a 50-foot tunnel exists.
