Nelson Mandela - Leaves Prison

On the 11th of February, 1990, Nelson Mandela became a free man.  He had served 27 years as a political prisoner in South Africa - mostly at the Robben Island prison.

Becoming head of the ANC (African National Congress), Mandela thereafter worked to secure the vote for South Africa's black citizens.  He was elected President of the country on April 27, 1994.
