On the Road, Looking for Food

As the situation in Ukraine grows more dire, people leave their villages to search for food elsewhere.

It is a daunting and nearly impossible task since the farming villages all share the same fate. Policies against farmers, which Stalin has imposed, apply throughout the whole land.

This image depicts hungry villagers who have left their own place to search for food in the town of Kharkiv. The picture was taken by Alexander Wienerberger, a German national who was working in Kharkiv circa 1933, and is now part of the Innitzer Collection.

The photo is maintained at the National Museum in Kiev. It is part of a “Memorial in Commemoration of Famines’ Victims in Ukraine” and is online via the Holodomor Research & Education Consortium.

Curators, at the museum, provide this description of the photo:

This is a black and white image taken in Kharkiv in the 1932-33 [era] and is part of the Innitzer collection. This image depicts villagers leaving their home village with the hope that they will find food in the next town.

Many people, including children, died on the road like this, of starvation, moving from one location to another looking for food. Many of those bodies have never been accounted for, never mind found.
