People Living Out of Their Cars - Photo

The Great Depression negatively impacted Americans for many years during the first half of the 20th century. As late as March of 1940, people were still struggling to find jobs and support their families.

This photograph depicts the conditions of families living in Sacramento, California during 1940. Dorothea Lange, a famous photographer working for the federal government, took the picture. The U.S. National Archives provides its original caption:

Sacramento, California. Close-up of one of 125 living units in squatter camps.... The dismantled automobile now provides an additional room for the house.
