Persepolis - Awesome Ruins

Persepolis - Awesome Ruins Ethics Ancient Places and/or Civilizations Archeological Wonders Geography Social Studies World History

Persepolis, in today’s Iran, is a treasure trove from ancient times.  Capital of the Achaemenid Empire, the town was founded by Darius I in 518 BC.

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran tells us about the area where the still-famous city was constructed:

It was built on an immense half-artificial, half-natural terrace, where the king of kings created an impressive palace complex inspired by Mesopotamian models.

When Alexander the Great defeated Darius III, thereby conquering the Persian Empire, his troops significantly damaged the once-majestic city.
