Peshtigo Fire - Fleeing to the River

Peshtigo Fire - Fleeing to the River American History Disasters Social Studies STEM Nineteenth Century Life Tragedies and Triumphs

History tells us that the people of Peshtigo were taken totally by surprise when the Great Fire roared through, and consumed, their town on the 8th of October, 1871:

The fire came upon them so suddenly that it was not in the reach of mortal power to stay its fury.  (The Great Fire of Chicago, Chapter VIII - "The Fires in Michigan and Wisconsin" - page 75.)

This scene, published in an October 1871 Harper's Weekly issue, depicts people seeking refuge from the flames at the Peshtigo River.
